Patterns to make the dog coat are 3:

Coat: cut with the fabric folded in half and cut two equal pieces, one for the outer fabric and other for lining.

Collar: cut with the fabric folded in half to come out twice as long and cut two equal pieces, one for outer fabric and other for lining.

Chest strip: cut 4 equal pieces, two rectangles for the lining and two for the outer fabric.

FABRICS:

It’s recommended to use plaid or tartan fabrics, in my case I used a “furberrys” wool scarf for the outer part . For the collar I used fleece on the outside and gray fake suede (suedette) for the lining, but you can use any fabric lightly thick or stiff, even you can use quilted anorak if you want to give more thickness or a warmest garment.

For the binding I used a strip of fake leather fabric, but the binding is optional.

Keep in mind two things, the first is that the coat goes double, that means you have to sew with lining. All the coat, the collar and the chest strips go with lining.

Secondly, this dog coat can be made in a simpler way (without binding) or in a more sophisticated way (with binding) as I did. Here I’ll explain how I have done this coat with binding, but for those who prefer do it more easily without binding the instructions are the same, but without putting the binding strip. OK? So let’s go. Once we cut out the dog coat pattern we can start to sew.

HOW TO SEW THE COAT STEP BY STEP:

1. Sewing the collar. Place the lining fabric (in grey) with the right side up and place the leather binding with the folded side inwards all around the edge except on the part that will goes attached to the coat as you see in the picture below. Baste to keep the binding secure.

Cover with the outer fabric (brown), place with right sides facing together like a sandwich with the binding between fabrics. Sew (machine) all around the edge except on the part that will goes attached to the coat.

3. Sewing the chest strips. Cut out 4 rectangles, two for the lining and two for the outer fabric (plaid). Sew all around the edge with right sides facing together but leave open one short side so you can turn right side out. Turn right side out. See image below:

If you want you can finish with topstitch the edge to make the seams flatter.

4. Sewing the coat. Put the coat lining (in grey) with the right side up, place the leather binding with folded side inwards all around the edge. First baste the leather binding to keep the stitching secure as we did with the collar.

Next place on top the collar with the lining (grey) or wrong side up.

Now place the chest strips BELOW the leather binding and with the sewing side inwards and right side up (plaid) as you can see in the image below.

Sew dog coat

Cover with the coat outer fabric (plaid)-place with the right side down.

Sew coat

Sew machine all around except a few inches on the bottom so you can turn the garment right side out.

Turn right side out. Sew the part that remains opened. Sew a square of velcro at the end of the strips and you’re done!!!
